Obedience Training Classes

OBEDIENCE CLASSES BEGIN TUESDAY EVENING, NOV. 17, 2009 FROM 7:00 PM TO 8:00 PM AND RUN FOR SEVEN WEEKS. SIGN UP NOW!!

AS THIS YEAR DRAWS TO A CLOSE, I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND GOOD WISHES AND THANKS TO ALL OF MY PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE STUDENTS.

IN CLASS, WE'VE FOCUSED  ON TEACHING OUR DOGS AND OURSELVES NEW WAYS OF DOING THINGS. AS WE APPROACH THE HOLIDAY SEASON, THIS  WOULD BE A GREAT TIME TO  SIT BACK AND REFLECT ON ALL THE LESSONS THAT OUR PETS HAVE TAUGHT US. THROUGHOUT ALL OF MY EXPERIENCES,  I HAVE FOUND THAT THERE IS VALUE TO THE SAYING, DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF AND I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE SOME VALUABLE LESSONS WITH YOU.

THINGS THAT WE CAN LEARN FROM OUR DOGS

NEVER PASS UP THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO FOR A JOY RIDE. ALLOW THE EXPERIENCE OF FRESH AIR AND THE WIND IN YOUR FACE TO BE PURE ECSTASY.

WHEN LOVED ONES COME HOME, ALWAYS RUN TO GREET THEM. WHEN SOMEONE IS HAVING A BAD DAY, BE SILENT, SIT CLOSE BY AND NUZZLE THEM GENTLY.

WHEN IT'S IN YOUR BEST INTEREST, PRACTICE OBEDIENCE.

LET OTHERS KNOW THAT THEY'VE INVADED YOUR TERRITORY.

TAKE NAPS AND STRETCH BEFORE RISING. RUN, ROMP AND PLAY DAILY.

EAT WITH GUSTO AND ENTHUSIASM.

BE LOYAL

NEVER PRETEND TO BE SOMETHING THAT YOU'RE NOT.

AVOID BITING WHEN A SIMPLE GROWL WILL DO.

WHEN YOU'RE HAPPY, DANCE AROUND AND WAG YOUR ENTIRE BODY.

NO MATTER HOW OFTEN YOU'RE SCOLDED, DON'T BUY INTO THE GUILT AND POUT. RUN RIGHT BACK AND MAKE FRIENDS.

DELIGHT IN THE SIMPLE JOY OF A LONG WALK.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS,
DEB

A new series of classes begin on Saturday, November 7, 2009.  Classes will run from 10:00 am to 11:00 am for seven weeks.

When you are considering obedience classes, a serious consideration in your decision should be the methods of training used by the dog obedience schools; you should look for trainers who believe in kind, positive methods of training. Dog trainers who encourage the use of choke chains or any kind of rough handling should be avoided at all costs. Although there are many trainers, there a lot these days that have no real life experience and just use a basic scripted curriculum.

Contact Deb now at 215-437-1932 to sign up for the classes.  Deb has 16 years of experience not only at the Women’s Humane Society but also with private clients. Deb’s methods are positive and she is truly an advocate for the dog.

Just a reminder that pre-holiday classes fill up quickly!!! Because the holidays bring more people and new experiences into your home, you’ll want to make sure that your dog will know how to handle people, noises and the festivities that go along with holiday celebrations.

The cost for the 7 week series of classes is $90 ($85 if you adopted from our shelter) and are usually held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. Some classes have an orientation session. Participants must bring a health certificate from their veterinarian stating the dog is in good health, has had distemper, parvo and rabies shots, and does not have external or internal parasites.

For information about registering and when our next classes begin call us at 215-750-3100. To register for Tuesday and Thursday evenings or Saturday mornings call Debbie at 215-437-1932, For Wednesday mornings or evenings call Faith at 215-379-3419).

Usually your dog wants to please you, but that can be difficult if he/she doesn’t understand what you want. Training classes improve communication between dog and owner in a fun environment.

Obedience classes have many advantages for you and your dog. The advantages include:

  • strengthening the bond between you and your dog.
  • help your dog learn the rules of the human world.
  • build better communication and mutual respect.

Our obedience training classes teach basic commands such as sit, down, stay, leave it, heel (how to walk on a leash) come, and how to calmly walk by other dogs and strangers.  Our canine trainer/human educators training philosophy prioritizes respect for the dog and understanding how the canine learns and thinks.  Listen to your dog until you discover what is needed.  The method of training involves positive motivation, flexibility and, most importantly, FUN.
